MarQueis Gray could be out for a month, but Max Shortell proved Saturday he is more than ready to fill in at quarterback.

It was quite obvious from the different play calling what the coaches think of Shortell's passing compared to Gray. We keep hearing how Gray has looked so good throwing the ball but the game evidence is the coaches don't have confidence in his passing. They should know, right? He looked pretty good against NH but only threw 8 passes and didn't impress Glen Smith. Gray shouldn't play unless he can move well. A running QB with a bad leg is not good. No time for senior loyalty here, we need to win. I'm not sold on Shortell. He has played very poor also. He's not very mobile and won't escape much pressure. I am intrigued by Nelson being the backup now. I think he is the whole package. He can pass and can run. I hope Shortell seizes the job but I think the future is Nelson. Gray would make one hell of a TE, maybe in the NFL.

Congrats to Shortell, as it was nice to have a passing attack and let the RB do the running. If Shortell had started all of last year, he would be doing better now with his reads. Last year was a learning year and he should have been QB, with Gray staying at receiver. This week should prove the direction Kill should go, Shortell or Nelson? With the team being young, this year is also a learning year.

Maybe I am the only one that thinks this way, but is there any chance that the reason the coaches didn't have Gray throwing the ball that much is because they didn't need him to throw a lot to win and they were trying to keep the cat in the bag until conference play so they could catch Iowa and Northwestern off guard? It seems reasonable to me if they thought they could win the non conference games without depending on the passing game too much.

rysau makes a valid point. hopefully shortell pulls out the 4.2 speed in two weeks against Iowa and lets the running qb out of the bag! LOL.. I am looking forward to Saturday night. I grew up in MN and have never had the opportunity to go to a Gophers game. That all changes Saturday night baby! It SHOULD be a good game and I hope Shortel continues to impress. My fear is now that Syracuse can gameplan for him it will be the same Shortel we saw last year.

rysau, it was because gray can't throw an accurate ball, or do you think that is all part of the deception as well?
