The sophomore quarterback was impressive in leading the Gophers to victory after MarQueis Gray got hurt. A quarterback controversy?

Defenses will adjust and make Shortell pay for slinging it around like he did today. In fact, Western Michigan did get an interception in the second half. We saw this last season, too. The real quarterback controversy will occur next season, when it will be between Shortell and Nelson. For now, start Gray if possible, Shortell if necessary.

Totally disagree with scribacct. With the terrible season the Gophers had last year, Kill should have played Shortell to give him the experience needed now. Gray was a nice end and could have been moved to running back at times for a complete offense. Every team needs a passing attack and Shortell gives it to them.

WHY DOES THIS AREA HAVE SO MANY COACHES WHO DON'T KNOW WHO TO PLAY WHERE?

Yes, unfortunately. I cant understand why Kill wants to run the ball against these non conference opponents instead of getting Gray ready for the Big Ten where we know theyll be getting behind and have to throw.

Even though Gray is a much better athlete, why are we playing him anyway? Why aren't we developing our players who WILL BE HERE next year?

Dunno. Shortell looked pretty good. Heck, the whole team looked pretty good for these first three games but if they had been playing bona fide Big Ten talent instead of the Little Sisters Of The Poor things might not be looking quite so rosy. Let's reserve judgment until after maybe the third regular-season game or so.

There should not be a controversy. Kill should play the best quarterback - Stortell. Gray is a good athlete, but a very bad qb who cannot catch a snap and constantly fumbles. Plus his coaches do not trust him to pass the ball. The best person should play at every position. This stuff about leadership of the team is bull. Why should the team be led by a person who constantly underperforms and fumbles and can't catch a snap? Time to move on for the good of the team.

As a season ticket holder, I will leave it as this...Quarterbacks pass the ball. Running backs run the ball. Play Shortell.

Ugh. Are we really going through this again? The last time this happened, Shortell got the start (again due to Gray being injured). The result? 58-0 loss at Michigan. Way to stir the pot, Rachel.
