Call for backup is difference-maker

Max Shortell sparked a Gophers victory -- and perhaps a who's-No.-1 debate -- with his work in relief of injured MarQueis Gray.

Hopefully all is well with the Gophers by 20 October - I'd hate to see any excuses when it's time to play the Badgers.

3 wins against the patsies. Syracuse wont be easy, but the only games I see them with a chance of winning are maybe Iowa, Northwestern and Illinois. All the other games would be huge upsets which you know aint happening.

3 games, 3 wins. Way ahead of the last 3 seasons. True, they were not top 25 teams, but the Gophers are learning to win with Kill. They are a young team but they are improving. Interesting that Gray and Shortell are opposites as far as QB skills. They can both help the Gophers to win. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Let's not kid ourselves. You don't learn to win against very low competition. You NEED to win against very low competition. Western Michigan is an "ok" MAC team and nothing more and that's the best we've seen so far this year. We're certainly better, but it's not time to get overly excited. Let's see how we progress when we get to Big 10 play. The conference looks fairly weak this year, so we should be competitive if we really are showing progress.

Got to give kuddos to Shortell for stepping in and leading the offense to three key drives for scores. He looked good. Sorry to see Gray get hurt. I realy would love to see Gray at slot or running back and Shortell under center. We have young receivers anyway - it may make for a pretty decent offense. Not content with our defense though. The Broncos seemed to move the ball relatively easy today. Got to improve here.

Maybe he's one who actually wants to be a quarterback and not just a running back. Give him the job and shift Gray to the only area he cares apout.

I'm not a Gopher fan, but let me offer this: these may not be BIG wins against Top 25 teams, but Winning tends to encourage a taste for Winning. I'm sure David thumped a few squirrels before he popped Goliath.

The writer wrote that the OC called a pretty conservative game in the beginning. Shows that he doesn't have enough confidence in Gray yo pass the ball. If you keep running your QB into a stacked defensive front, eventually, he will get hurt and that's what happened today to Gray. You have to be more balanced in your play calling. Hoping Gray will recover in time for the Syracuse game. For all the whiners, stop whining! Yes, the 3 wins weren't against top teams, but are you really expecting the Gophers to win the Big 10, go to the Rose Bowl and compete for the National Championship! Continue to improve and get better and be competitive in the Big 10 and continue to beat up on the non Big 10 schools. Would have hate to see what this message board had the Gophers lost all 3 games instead of winning them all. Relax and enjoy the journey. Go Gophers!
