So setting up a deadly confrontation between wolf and dog is sport, but setting up a deadly fight between two dogs is a serious crime? (posted by a lifelong duck and deer hunter)

I have no problem with a limited hunt for wolves, but the Wisconsin hound folks are sure a strange lot. They send their dogs into the woods with wolves at a particularly dangerous time of year (for the dogs) to do so. Yes they are training them or running them on bears or other animals, not wolves--but the wolves are out there and it's well known they are highly territorial that time of year. In other words, they won't tolerate other dogs around--wolf, coyote, or dog, doesn't matter to them, you run by their den with youngsters and they won't stand for it. So WI hound people continue to run their dogs in the woods with wolves at this dangerous time of year. Dogs naturally run into wolves and get killed. They insist there are more wolves than the experts claim are there, and they let everyone know who will listen how horrible the deaths of their dogs is. Then they want to use the same dogs they say are so in danger from wolves to go after wolves directly!?! Huh? As for how many wolves there really are in WI, I noticed that even if you doubled the #'s that the WI DNR says they have, MN has more than twice that amount, and has for some years now. Yet we don't have anywhere near the controversy with dogs being killed by wolves here in MN. I guess I'm glad this nonsense with hound hunting hasn't crossed the border. Hope it stays that way.

tmrichardson - I hope more than just the practice of hound hunting doesn't cross the MN/WI border.

I think the tribes of northern Wisconsin have it right. They are against wolf hunting, with or without dogs. This kind of hunting is nothing but blood lust.

How about a hunter going after a wolf with nothing but his brain and his bare hands? Won't happen. Courageous men just don't go wolf hunting.

Law Suits.... At this very moment the Environmental Radical groups with their abusive Endangered Species Act and EAJA (Equal Access to Justice Act) have the following Wolf law suits in the works. Colorado - suing for wolves in the Small Rocky Mountain National Park. New Mexico - suing because allowing chronic depredating wolves to do their thing is more important than protecting private property & running ranchers off their private land is high priority. Oregon - sue so they don't have to follow the Oregon Wolf Management Plan for removing chronic depredating wolves. Wisconsin - suing to severely limit any kind of control sportsman have and will need to effectively control these vermin. Wyoming - suing because they need to sulk for they didn't get there way AND because the state has the correct management strategy that the local people want all while hoping to get activist Judge molloy to hear their case. Maine (New England) region - suing because the oversized coyotes they have aren't good enough to replace what sportsman are doing effectively. Minnesota - suing just for the fun of it - and because 3000 wolves isn't enough and killing 200 of the vermin yearly on the governments dime isn't enough! Idaho / Montana - suing because laws from congress aren't good enough and they think they have a ("separation of powers") leg to stand on. Alaska - suing because they want to know every wolf that is managed via "Aerial" management. Why do they do it........ here is the pay off.... listed below are just four of the law suits and the EAJA tax dollars paid to the groups to cover THEIR attorney fees. *Defenders of Wildlife v. Hall USFWS, 1:08-cv-56 (D. Mont.) - $263,099.66 Wolf Challenge against the USFWS's 2008 decision to delist the northern Rockies. *Defenders of Wildlife v. U.S. Dep of Int, 1:03-cv-1348 (D. Ore.) - $272,710.54 Down listing" of the gray wolf from endangered to threatened status. *National Wildlife Federation v. Norton, 1:03-CV-340 (D. Vt.) - $255,500 Wolf argument over Distinct population segments *Humane Society of the U S v. Kempthorne USFWS, 1:07-cv-0677 (D.D.C.) - $280,000 Western Great lakes delisting. Keep in mind that it does not include dollars spend by the government to defend the suit and the judicial cost (Judge and court costs)........ REFORM IS NEEDED! Support Congresswoman Lummis and her effort to reform the ESA!
