Souhan: U pitching coach has plenty of relief help during difficult time

Supporters have rallied behind Todd Oakes while he undergoes leukemia treatment -- not the least of whom is son Tyler.

Several years ago I took my grandson to a Gopher baseball game at the dome. We were sitting in the front row between the Gopher's doughout and the bullpen. An errant throw from the bullpen ended up in the stands near us and by grandson picked it up. I told him to throw it back to the bullpen guys as they were still warming up. Pitching Coach Todd Oakes apparently saw that and came over to us with a large bag of baseballs. He reach in, sorted through them, and gave us the best ball in the bag. Needless to saw, it made my grandson very happy and made for a nice memory for both of us. Get well soon Todd!

This is what Souhan does well. Tells a story about a individual where he just doesn't get cute, doesn't inject himself into the story (Hey: lookit me. I talked with Favre), doesn't go for the pop culture analogy, and keeps his radio opinions out of the copy. Reusse does it better, but Reusse just does it all better at this paper. As for Oakes, good guy for whom we hope for the best.

When I was in high school, Oakes' school was on our schedule for everything. In football, basketball and baseball, he was a man among boys and dominated in all three sports.
