Reusse column on Tom Kelly after the 1991 World Series

I started writing sports columns in the Twin Cities in 1979. There have been over 8,000 through the years. This might be my favorite -- a column written for the Star Tribune of Oct. 29, 1991. The scene was Tom Kelly’s office in the Metrodome, in the hours after the Twins won Game 7 of the World Series:

I called Kirby's homerun in game 6. When he went 3-1, I turned to my wife/at the time and said, "he's hitting the next one out". But game 7 noone could have called. That decoy at second was brilliant. That's the kinds of things those Twims did. Not today though. There's a scene in the movie "The Bucket List", where Jack's watching the Dodgers on tube and says, "that's the problem with these kids nowadays, they don't know the fundamentals". How true, how true.

This organization's fall from grace is kind of sad. I'm not talking about the last two years. It started when Andy MacPhail left in 1994. Terry Ryan and Ron Gardenhire have gradually turned this organization into a laughing stock. The way they draft is an abominatation. Low ceiling pitch to contact pitchers. They don't draft power hitters. Just speedy, light hitting slap hitters. And worst of all, a soft, laid back mindset has engulfed the team. Time for change. Bring back MacPhail and TK!

Gives me goose bumps. I was only 10 years old, but man was it fun to watch that series. It couldn't have been any better if it was written for a movie script. Once again, the Minnesota Twins are baseballs wooooooorld champions!

I was lucky enough to be at game 1,2 6 & 7. that win lifted a weight off my shoulders forever. I saw my team win it all and that win made it easier to endure what our pro teams have done since then. Thanks TK

TK was smart enough to get out while he still had his sanity.

lindy_frank is right, these playes now a days don't know the fundamentals and the coach of these players is too laid back to care. the 1991 Twins were ball players first and pro athletes second. the decoy at 2nd was proof that these guys worked hard and did what it takes to win. Dan Gladden scored the winning run in the 7th game and the reason why he did was because he hustled and turned a routine single in to a double forcing Cox's walk Puckett and Hrbek. The twins need a culture change. FIRE GARDENHIRE!!!!!!!!!!
