The Strib has it points writing this article. therefore, so do I. Now that the bridge will be closed, it will make it easier go to downtown stillwater and enjoy it with out getting jam up to the WI eastern burbs traffic jam. therefore,. forcing you to detour to Hudson. after all. the eastern burbs is moving into WI. and what was Hudson as a small town. may want to extend their tacky mall just off I-94. and perhaps extend the transit Train into Hudson. per permission to the Union Pacific. yes, the bridge will be build, but it will take several years. and also, the Historical Bridge will be saved for a walk and bike train. no cars or motor cycles. and no trucks that has ruin the historical landmark bridge. that is partly the problem, the over weight trucks.

Oh say, Times have change. and the Farmers in eastern burbs WI will be gone with-in a few years. and by the way, it's nothing new. what about the farms that was lost to all the Interstates? matter of fact. why is it that the Amish being farmers have more common sense. they accept the fact that the city has extended their burbs to what was once farm land. and they will move father out, to Western MN. plenty of Farms. so, the Farms in Western WI will become a 4 Lane into what is already 4 Lane Highway. The cranky farmers will just have to retied. after all. they were told for the last 30 years. Times and Life is tough. besides that, Farms have become run by Companies hiring out contract workers. perhaps 2 shifts. 5 days. with option having a weekday off instead of a weekend day.

Help me out here. Why are we dumping millions into a bridge that will be closed? And once it's closed, will we still have to pay someone to maintain and operate the lift?

So if downtown Stillwater does just fine with the lift bridge closed, and people find alternative routes to work.... Can someone tell me why we still need to spend the $700M on a new bridge? Improve the connections down to the I-94 bridge and spend the money on other bridges around the state that are fracture critical.

Twincities1. the point of the new bridge is because of the damn trucks have ruin this Historical Bridge. also, Downtown Stillwater is about shopping and enjoy its Historical Landmarks, it was not build for all the WI Easter Metro extend burbs. therefore. I-94 is the Interstate, and likewise to fair out of the way for those that live in the WI burbs to commute. however, remember this, because of the burbs in WI, it will do us no harm. 70% if those of going over the bridge live in the burbs and commutes into the Metro, but get a load of this. no more cheating on Property Taxes. because when one files where they are Employed. they will be tax for using the bridge, again. the new bridge is for the commuters to the burbs. and will lighten up on the traffic into Stillwater. that Bridge in downtown Stillwater is a land mark and will be save from that have no value pint for landmarks. therefore, that town have been their for around 175 years. and like I said, in WI was all wood farms and not one sq mi was forecast at that time as the eastern burbs. and where some bozo gets millions to keep that bridge is rather screwed up. because it will cost $1 Bill to build that damn football Stadium. therefore, by saving that bridge for Bikes and Foot Traffic going. Traffic will not be permitted including motorcycles. and that noise will no longer be a hazard to downtown Stillwater in several more years.

ALL THESE EXTRA MILLIONS TO WASTE ON A FUTURE FOOT BRIDGE, BEST BET WOULD BE TO SHUT THE BRIDGE DOWN TO FOOT TRAFFIC, GET RID OF THE HIGHWAY DEPT'S PLAY PEN AND IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GET RID OF THESE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS, DONATE IT TO THE CITY OF STILLWATER, I KNOW FOR POSITIVE THEY COULD DO BETTER THAN THE HIGHWAY DEPT.

So, what part of bridge maintenance until the new bridge is open in 2016 or 2017 didn't people get who complain about "dumping millions into a bridge that will be closed". And foot traffic, does not produce the wear and tear that car and truck traffic does. Paying someone to lift the bridge probably on the weekends most likely, in the boating season, is far less than constant multi-million dollar bridge repair.

What we will find out is that we really don't need a bridge there all that bad. Too bad it's too late to get back that $700,000,000 + commitment.

Just because some people don't use the bridge they think its not needed. I don't use the 35w bridge and people got around without it when it went down, but I know its for the public good that these projects get done. As for it being a scenic waterway, I guess its all perspective, from the Wisconsin side all you see is condos, a power plant, river boats, bar signs and marinas.

The point of the new bridge is because of the Burbs going father and farther out. therefore, cheating on property taxes. but get a load of this, that is no longer true. for example Kansas City, the Property Taxes are equal Value on either side MO/KS. same for Washington VA/DC Philly PA/NJ/DL New York, NY/NJ/CT Boston. MA/NH/RI OR/WA WA/ID IL/IN/WI OH/IN/KY so forth and so on.
