How good it was to read a story that entailed reminisces about the Vikings from the Burns era; what a good old time it was. Whereas football now is like a mix of sport and business administration, back then it used to be a bit more like sport and the circus. And for proof of this, netflix - what is my favorite Vikings game of all-time (and I started watching as a kid in '85), the Vikings versus the 49ers at Candlestick Park in January of '88 - it comes a week before the loss to the Redskins. The game seemed, because of the way of the refs, the players, and the coaches, a lot more human, a lot more amusing; hence, a lot more interesting and entertaining. The joke on us all today - and I will take the chance of sounding negative - is that we comment about sports more than ever when the product is weaker than ever. Why is this? Watch that game of the Vikings at Frisco, and you will get an idea why. None of the players - not even Joe Montana - came off as rich boys, celebrities. I don't believe they got paid enough back then. And so given the absence of the status of what pretty much amounts to modern day royalty, the aura of a playoff game back then was actually fairly similar to the aura of a construction worksite: just a bunch of guys going to town, with, as might be imagined, a higher level of intensity. Professional football, basically, seemed a lot more professional, unlike what it appears to be now, this thing that, though we don't for sure know why, is ultra important. Think of the deathly serious faces on the coaches (Mike McCarthy anyone?), and the heavy duty headsets they wear too. One would think these coaches now are guarding the cure to cancer. Back then there was more of the, cross your arms and look the other guy in the eye. It was more primal.
