U's Kaler: It's all about return on investment

The u pres can pay as much as he wants but he still has no answer to income inequality, etc... So he's not my hero. We have to hope that trickle down economics works.

Who is kidding who, here? Kaler isn't making any tough decisions. Most of the funny money in the administration of the U continues. The Strib has done a fab job detailing all this, but not yet accounting for any substantial change being made in the Kaler Administration. That's because there isn't much. The University's administration is a cesspool. All indications are that Kaler doesn't have the recipe to clean it up. He's another go-along, get-along, let-me-get-mine higher ed administrator. Just like his predecessor. Wish people would wake up and smell this rancid coffee.

It's easy to get high ROI for the state when the state only "invests" in 16 percent of the U's annual budget. The other revenue sources include tuition, sponsored research, fees, gifts and other sources. At 16 percent support, the state hardly owns the U anymore.

All of the low skill jobs that can be shipped overseas, have been. The future economy will depend on the availability of a high quality workforce, including many people with post graduate degrees. i'd agree that aspects of the U should be streamlined, but let's not forget that the U is a vital economic asset.

Instead, they say, why can't the university do its job cheaper? Does it really need all of its more than 25,000 employees?" Productivity-Productivity-Productivity. How many employees do they have and how close are they to the $8.6 billion mark? $344,000 per employee looks like a pretty good productivity number to me.

I support the U as a member of the President's Club. But rather than quote a flawed ROI study (conducted by a firm selected and paid for by the U), Pres Kaler should focus his efforts on streamlining a very large workforce, eliminating inefficiencies and increasing internal productivity along with external private contributions and research funding. Yes, he needs to be an out-front spokesman for the U and tout its economic impact throughout the state. But his major efforts should be put toward what all good CEOs do: making the machine run better and better. It's why they get the big bucks.

Lots of good things happening at the U of M. Including a Freshman class of the highest GPA and ACT requirements in the history of the school. As far as Kahler- he's been there what? A year? Hey critcal posters- cut the fella' some slack! True enough it's a huge place and along with size likely does come some inefficiency. Kahler will do fine. But give the guy some elbow room ... and a few more days on the job before becoming too analytical!

Yep, nice ROI. After graduating with an engineering degree, the best, and only, job offer came from the famed Lockheed Skunkworks in California. I would have much rather stayed in Minnesota, but a person has got to eat! Any systems (non-IT) engineering jobs out there?

I was encouraged a few months ago when the U determined for the first time ever, what their costs were. I am disappointed that they are satisfied stopping there. My take on this article is that they are satisifed with these macro, self assessed numbers on impact to the state and that they will continue to grow and assume that operational excellence is already occurring. As a U alum who sent 2 kids through just a few years ago I respectfully disagree with Mr Kaler. The cost has skyrocketed at the U and it doesn't look like they feel a need to do anything about it. If I were Mr Kaler, I would bring in an objective, outside consulting firm to give an assessment of what opportunities exist and benchmarking to change the public perception.
