Great article Pat..I miss that park. I remember driving up Cedar and you could see those lights...brings chills to my body. Hightlight for me was the exhibition game between San Fran and the remember it? Mays and Killebrew in a homerun contest. Nothing gets better than that.

I love these reminiscences, Patrick. And -wow! - what an NL roster.

The Met was a poor excuse for a ballpark, but the All-Star Game back then really was a competition. Now, it's just a bore.

Oh, and my stepdad and I went to the '85 All Star game at the Metrodome. It was so dull, we went home early.

the met may have been a lame ballpark but i remember it fondly. all-star game, world series and the beatles all in the same year -- amazing.

The only thing lame about the Met in 1965 was the Twins-O-Gram. Not far away at that time were the days when you couldn't tell if you were watching a game from Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, or St Louis with their multi-purpose cookie cutter artificial turf monstrosities. We were fortunate.

Was it really worth it to place teams in San Diego and Toronto at the price of diluting the talent to the degree that it has? I love Justin, but in 1965 he would have been Don Mincher, no more. Baby Jesus would have been handsomer than Joe Torre, but not a better player. Would Trout or Hamilton have fared better than Oliva against the likes of Lolich, Wilhelm, or Palmer? No way.

Was at the Met for one of the last Brewers game of the season... was sitting in left center field, and couldn't really see the scoreboard, with the sun on it....Jim Slaton had a no hitter going into the 9th inning and we didn't even realize it until Sal Butera lined a single into center field for a hit.......unreal, but what a great memory..........

Terrific column. The Twins were at that moment on the verge of doing the rest of the baseball world a MAJOR favor and toppling the Yankees' dynasty. Our squad had monstrous power and terrific pitching, which it needed to knock off Mantle, Maris, Ford, We had it GOING ON here then, and it was a blast. We were so blessed to have super teams and superstars leading them in those days--Twins & Killebrew/Oliva, then the Vikes & Grant, Tarkenton. Final thought--the Met was a WONDERFUL baseball facility. Think Dodger Stadium, very similar layouts. Poor for football, however. Thank God the team more than made up for it, on the field!

While the "met" would not be considered a great MLB park to a 10 yr old kid in 1961 I was awestruck and was the happiest kid in the ball park watching the Twins win both ends of a double header against the White Sox.
