Higher car prices, yeah. And I assume a lot less power too (?). Nobody's gonna like it. But 1.) we're in an oil-based pickle, and 2.) we're spoiled rotten.

President Obama in his great wisdom should instead ban friction. Look government can solve problems!

Higher fuel efficiency = lighter car = more danger and death. Higher fuel efficiency = driving more = no savings. The only oil shortage is the shortage created by politicians and oil producing countries. We have enough oil for hundreds of years here in the US, but, nobody will let us get it. Good luck.

Will have the secondary benefit of severely reducing, if not eliminating, the manufacturing of vehicles with the ability to tow gas-guzzling, CO2-belching boats, snowmobiles, and 4-wheelers. You "sportsmen" better stock up on your 300 HP trucks before they're all gone!

Seriously, repubs are even against this? Why is this not logical?

Romney's response to this is yet one more reason not to vote GOP. GOP wants Americans to remain addicted to big oil. Big oil is their base.

What a fantastic job: to just decree something, immediately receive credit for the results of the decree and then move on. Leaving countless people who will have to work out the details, overcome the obstacles, while trying to stay profitable and in business, all the while probably being vilified by many for not working fast enough. Thanks for saving us from ourselves president Obama!

Yep ! classic mythical number crunching/ thinking,cause thats all they can do to be(productive?). So it will be higher milage/lower fuel cost at the expence of higher funeral cost because of unintended realistic thinking.

With increased demand from India and China, the long-term outlook for gas prices isn't good. I'm not too excited about mandating fuel efficiency, though. I think a better approach would be to raise gas taxes once the recession has ended. That would contribute toward decreasing the deficit, it would fund highway maintenance and mass transit, and it would increase demand for more fuel efficient cars.

The reason the repubs are against it is because they are against conservation of resources.
