Sid Hartman: Brinkley's play gives Vikings reason for optimism

The linebacker, coming back from a hip injury that sidelined him all of last year, looked good against the Chargers after having a rough time to start training camp.

Just keep on dishing out the kool-aid Sid. According to you, the two biggest football teams in the state are on a path to the playoffs. Shame on you for delivering false hope.

Jasper is going to get schooled at the position starting Week 1. Why can't the Vikings see this coming?! He is NOT an NFL caliber starting linebacker, much less a good one. And it's not even close. When we look back on the 2012/13 season, one of the key story lines will be how the Vikings brain trust decided to go into the season with a solid special teams player starting at one of the most critical positions on defense; with no backup plan.

And here come the haters. Why are Vikings fans so negative. I like Brinkley. Do I think he'll be a Pro Bowler, no. But when Brinkley plays aggressive and attacks downhill, he can be a very effective player. He'll probably always struggle a little sideline to sideline, but a lot of MLBs struggle with that, such as Joe Mays in Denver. Same type of player. Brinkley can be a solid starter. How about actually supporting our players? It's not even winter yet up there in MN, why are you guys so mad?

"Cooper basketball star Rashad Vaughn's Raymond Lewis squad beat Apple Valley standout Tyus Jones' Marques Johnson squad 164-138 at the Under Armour Elite 24 game on Saturday night in Venice Beach, Calif." How elite can these teams be with that sort of defense?

Honestly, I'm trying to figure out what are Jasper Brinkley's strengths as a middle linebacker. Rushing the QB? An occasional tackle? That's about all I've seen from the guy. I have yet to see him blow up a ball carrier with a crushing tackle, stuff a run at the line, block a pass or just look in any way like he's controlling the field of play. At the moment I'd rate him as a second or third string LB, not the impact player the Vikings seem to be hoping for.

"• Vikings Vice President Lester Bagley said the club has applied to be host of the 2018 Super Bowl, and if by some real luck it is awarded it, the new stadium seating would have to be increased from its originally planned capacity of 66,000 to 73,000 as required to play host to a Super Bowl." I seem to recall the Vikings saying if they got a new stadium they would get to host Super Bowls. So if that was the plan why wasn't originally planned to have the 73,000 seats? Or is it designed in such a way that it's easy to add 7,000 more seats? Also that added seating, is that being paid by the Vikings or added to the public's share? Inquiring minds want to know!

My 72 year old gramma could run over Brinkley. Even with this easy schedule the Vikes will be lucky to win 5 games. DOA for 2012!
