It doesn't take 12-plus paragraphs to explain the obvious -- the Vikings have lacked WR talent other than Harvin since Rice went down before training camp in 2010, and have done little to improve these circumstances. It's really sad how the Vikings really expect street free agents (Jenkins, Aromashodu, Arceaneux) and low round picks (Burton) at the WR position to really make a difference. That's just foolish and destined to fail. Ponder continues to stare down Rudolph and Harvin and it's so obvious to defenses he has no confidence in anyone else. It will be rough sailing games 1-3 while Simpson is out, who has his own issues.

By the way, let's not anoint Jerome an NFL receiver just yet. Cincy let him go for a reason. He has Troy Williamson-itis. He'll probably be more useful than Berrian but we're talking about the same kind of player. And whoever ends up the third receiver will be useless but that's not that bad as long as the TEs stay healthy - where we are very deep. On another topic... I was thrilled that the Vikes took Kalil but it is just me or does he look like a generic 5th rounder out there? I've only watched the last two games but just about every time there's a sack it's his man getting it done. He allowed nothing in college. I didn't expect him to be continue that in the NFL but I expected way more than this.

redgrange12, i totally agree with your assessment of Kalil. I've been able to watch replays w playback of the 3 games now (i live outside the US so NFL.com has this service) and have watched Kalil every single play he's been in there and he does not look great at all. it is not just on the pass protection either - he has looked lost out there. there have been some good plays by him - like the one down on the goal line towards the end of the 1st half where the RB fumbled - he drove his guy back 4 yds easily, but he has not looked consistent yet.

Update of the Christian Ponder statement that he should be judged by his 3rd Down performance. Here's his Week 3 and Cumulative 3rd Down performance statistics. Week 3: 5 ATT, 2 COM, 25 YDS, 0 TD, 1 INT, 1 FD, .400 PCT, 16.67 QBRTG. Preseason Cumulative: 11 ATT, 5 COM, 41 YDS, 0 TD, 1 INT, .455 PCT, 17.61 QBRTG. Stay tuned. Over and out.

Harvin could have helped himself by catching the touchdown pass from Ponder. The Vikings are not good enough to overcome drops like that or the four by the running backs.

I got caught up in all the homer-hype during the spring and summer, and thought the Vikes could go 9-7. Now, having to face reality, it's looking more like 5-11.
