Anderson: Flood leads to request for flexibility in wetlands act

Bending the rules to fit the unique circumstances of flooding in northeastern Minnesota has some concerned.

Using the expertise of the agencies to act quickly and efficiently is a good plan. Once these streams lose their stability via flooding and scouring they don't restore themselves. Letting the agencies take the lead, rather than private enterprise, allows for adequate attention to the ecological and biological needs of the streams.

Why do we have to put it back the way it was? I’m not saying we shouldn’t I’m just asking why the rush? Do we really NEED to do anything? When things like this happened 300 years ago, no one was around to put anything back the way it was and nature did just fine on it’s own.

Streams will find their stability again without our intervention. The issue is that happens in geologic time, not in video game time that we expect now. Other than cases where infrastructure is threatened, nature should be allowed to take its course.
