Of course, women live longer than men, and there are more widowed women inheriting their late spouse's money than vice-versa. And just as anyone would question a study about food companies done by the Grocery Manufactuers of America, we need to keep the source of this study at the forefront.

They are most likely giving away their dead husband's money. Think about it. When the "older" people were younger, it was not common for the woman to work. They were stay-at-home moms (wish we had more of the today). And since women live longer than men, it only makes sense that they are the ones "giving" the money. Sowhen Bill Gates dies, and his wife give away a lot of money, who is the charitable one? What's the point of this story?

I was going to comment, but both "BallFour" and "rickbmn" have taken the words out of my mouth. For the reasons they've elucidated, this study is pointless, sexist nonsense.

Good points from the comments above. But philanthropy is not always just dollars. It is giving of time for volunteering and doing the typical " women's" thing of contributing to bake sales, fundraising meals, and caring for neighbors and relatives who need a helpful hand. I think women are used to that kind of helping and so it is not surprising that they would also be more generous with their dollars. In my family, I am the one who selects and donates to quite a number of charities and nonprofits. My husband chooses to spend his descretionary funds on self-care. But he doesn't tell me that I can't do what I do. So in that sense, it is a joint decision.

Well it has to be ‘men give more’ or ‘women give more’ - those are the only two options. But thank you very much for contributing to the never-ending barrage of stories that support the various class warfares. Aren't we growing weary of these stories?
