Neal: Claustrophobic Span can't go through MRI

Twins outfielder Denard Span was supposed to undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging exam on his clavicle today, but he couldn't go through with it.

If you've neve been in one of those machines you shouldnt really comment.they are uncomfortable and its not as easy as you'd think......I do think they shoukld sedate him though and get it done.for the money he makes , get it done..And yes people , I've been in one of those lovely machines about 10 x and it sucks.

Many people discover for the first time that they are claustrophobic while in the MRI machine. I am one of those people and was told by the staff that I wasn't an unusual case. They gave me an eye mask to wear and that made it tolerable for me. Just closing my eyes didn't work. They likely tried that with Span before the Valium but it must not have worked for him. There are also MRI machines that you stand up in that work better for some people. There are other drugs to try too. They should be able to get this figured out but don't knock Span for being claustrophobic in the MRI machine. Common and real.

Some people get the yips whenever they go to the doctor. White Coat Syndrome they call it. For Lavelle's fans who don't know the definition of claustrophobia, it's the fear of closed spaces. For example: I am going to the liquor store and I’m scared that it’s closed.
