Sacred stone carves a legacy

The soft, blood-red stone is still quarried by hand at Pipestone National Monument, a practice that dates back 3,000 years.

A beautiful outdoor pageant was performed at the Pipestone Monument for sixty years. It was based on Longfellow's poem "The Song of Hiawatha" and was performed at a natural amphitheater formed by the red rock cliffs surrounding a little lake. It was quite magical.
