I am sure there are a lot of guys in trade (plumbing, mining etc) that wished they had articles written about their ongoing physical hardships. Is this supposed to be ground breaking? So, NFL players, who play a violent game, which is why they are compensated well above the average Joe, can expect physical injuries later in life, this is somehow a new revelation? Hey, anyone who played HS or college ball is aware of the physical risk, and still playing for free. The pro guys are at least compensated and have a union. Thanks for the article though, there is a guy in Jersey who is looking out for them.

I can't believe I'm saying this, because I enjoy sports and sometimes put pro athletes on a pedestal like a lot of us, but why should they get pro bono work from doctors? What makes them more deserving of free medical care instead of the guy working on the factory floor 60 hours a week for 20+ years? Seems to me there would be a lot more of those people who could benefit from free medical care more than pro athletes.

The players union, the owners, the league, and the active players themselves should work together to establish a guaranteed-acceptance health insurance plan for retired players. Each of those groups should put money into it, and the retired players could contribute on a sliding scale based on their income and assets.
