Chip Scoggins: Harrison Smith is ray of hope at key position

  • Article by: CHIP SCOGGINS , Star Tribune

The team's safeties have only nine interceptions in the past three seasons. Over that same time, linemen and linebackers have 11.

Smith looked very good tonight. Raymond also redeemed himself by making some good plays. Hopefully this is a sign that our safties won't be the laughing-stock of the NFL any longer...

Keep him in there and let him grow. The Vikings need a good safety and Smith is the one who can fill that position.

I sure like our 2 first round draft picks so far. I cannot believe the number of 1st round picks this year that are injured, not performing well or have a legal problem.

The vikings took Smith three rounds too early but given how desperate they are in the defensive backfield he is certainly an upgrade over the amatuer clowns that started last year. We have seen early that Carr is horrible, Cook will never live up to his potential and Winfield is old, slow and cannot stay healthy.

vikesjnx has the right take on this. Excellent post. One round too early on Smith.

Love his attitude, quiet but plays hard! But mainly, he is a football player and has football instincts to play safety. He will continue to improve as he will be taking some lumps in his year as a starter. Hopefully, he will learn from those mistakes and becomes a better football player. As for being drafted too high, only time will tell as there is not efficient data just 2 weeks into the pre-season. Who knows...he could end up being a steal.

@seanboy, typical response from a typical "empty purple trophycaser". Funny how EVERY single comment a fellow purple homer doesn't like begins or ends with that homer accusing another of being a packer fan. Ignorance continue to run amuck in the "Empty Purple Trophy Case Nation"!!! LOL!!!

t@thetruithicn, I just don't believe in taking a cheap shot at a kid who hasn't even played in a regular season game yet, but I see they have removed my original post, so you're complaining didn't go unnoticed.

While the Viking’s defensive back drafting has been horrible, ( thanks Spielman), it’s been more an issue of scheme. Sharper’s turnover numbers dramatically dropped as soon as Frazier took over, but rebounded immediately in New Orleans . It has also been pointed out many times that Greenway’s lack of big plays is due to the scheme. Frazier’s defense does not put players in a position to create turnovers and why they are always at the bottom of the league. Super bowl teams are always near the top in that category. Frazier’s Tampa 2 is a long proven failure and he is too stubborn to realize it. Frazier will be fired before season’s end, mark my words………
