Target profit was flat, but there are plenty of signs of brighter days ahead for the retailer.

You can look at that as being a positive trend, but I see a much bigger predictor of the future of the economy. The cargo shipper FedEx is predicting lower growth and volumes for the rest of the year, even going so far as to offer buyouts to it's employees to lower its payroll. That's worrisome.

They will do well in Canada! AS soon as the dust settles up there, you'll see it on the bottom line. Canadian incomes are higher (considerably in some Provinces) than the US.

Cautious shoppers are spending because its back to school, the economy is tanking and will get worse as the year ends.

@martiankin: Careful about using Fedex and UPS as barometers for future economic movements. While they might be helpful put together with other information by themselves could mean anything. For instance bad management.
