Speedometers can reach stratosphere for a reason

Q What is the story with today's speedometer readings? Most new cars and a lot of used cars have speedometer gauges that go as high as 120 to 160 miles per hour. Why so high? Do they really go that fast or does that, for some reason, make the vehicle more attractive? I can't fathom going that fast with today's speed limits nor would I want to. Our speed limit in the metro area rarely exceeds 65 mph, so why the extended readings?

Speedometer- Now for the real reason; many, if not most cars now days can be easily programmed to directly read either miles per hour or kilometers per hour. While 160 MPH is rather out of sight, 160 KPH is only 100 MPH. Simple!

Wow, two thumbs down for the actual reason! PB's answer, besides being flippant, is pure fantasy. The number of cars used at open track events is smaller than miniscule- it is simply not a consideration for the manufacturers.

The speedometer comments are factual and interesting. On the other hand, nothing will earn more 'thumbs down' than pointing out an error or omission by PB. I presume PB scans these comments every week and gives thumbs down to those he doesn't like. I doubt more than a dozen or so people read this column and its associated comments.
