Stopping the run was one thing it could hang its hat on last season. But now?

It was the first game. The 49'ers were running a very simple offense and just handing the ball off. The vikings defenders have seen those plays since Jr. high school and should know what to do. It is real evident that the poor drafting of the last few years has really come back to bite them and rebuilding will take a very long time.

the problem is that we are not physical enough. but we can add it and we will in the next couple weeks. add Winfeild, Kevin Williams and start Harrison Smith (Mistral Raymond is a joke).hopfully Letroy Guion will be ready to go. I would like to see if Tyrone McKenzie could play in place of Erin Henderson

Are these coaches watching the same game? They should be concerned anytime they gave up 260+ yards rushing a game. Get these guys in the film room and have them learned their gap assignment. For God's sake, learn how to shed blockers so you can make a tackle please! How come it's Jared Allen that is willing to stand up and said that the defense was disappointing but yet the coaches take a nonchalant attitude about how bad the run defense was!

The biggest problem for fans right now is that we we spoiled with Pat Williams. he was huge so stong from the waist down. he took up 2 to 3 blockers every run play. no one ran up the middle on us. and some of that time we had Sharper who was very good at run support. Right now we need linebackers and safeties to step up and tackle.

The key to great run defense is huge d tackles. weather they want to admit it or not. some say they want speed pass rushing guys(like John Randle) which I agree if u can find them, very hard though. look around the leauge most teams have huge big maybe fat guys at this position. we dont have that, we have K Williams and Guion they are both around 310(not enough), u need to be 350 plus

wo1fmanAug. 14, 12 2:30 AM

ok I looked around most d tackles or nose tackles are around 330 but if u look at these guys they are so much bigger from waist down, and shorter to 6'1 -6'2 not 6'4-6'5. our guys more pass rushers than run stopper, and they are not even that good of pass rushers.

u would be better of with 2 huge guys that are slow but impossible to move and plug up the middle. and on 3rd down or 2nd and long bring in 2 more d-ends like the NY GIants do and have 4 speed ends rush the passer. for us that would be D'Aundre Reed and Everson Griffen that with Allen and Robison would be awsome pass rush

No linebacker depth this year is going to be a huge problem for this team.

Pre-season is often more than what it is on the surface. Sure, the Vikings were very selective about which starters played, but so was SF. Sure, the Vikings held back to ease player into the regular season, but so did SF. So, the argument that this preseason game wasn't any indicator on how well the Vikings starters will play this season is a fair one. But, what this preseason game did show us was that SF has better depth and perhaps a better program to more quickly develop young talent. ... Don't under estimate the how very important team depth is to a team's success because (unlike fantasy football) not every position can be filled with a Pro-bowler.

Heard same thing last year - the mistakes are correctable. Only problem - they never did get corrected and I doubt that Alan Williams will be any different. Only thing that fixes this D is to dump the Tampa 2 and that means Frasier needs to go. Alright with me.
