But eight badminton players lacked the ex-Wolves center's ability to be good at being bad on purpose.

Funny how similar actions under different circumstances can be perceived in a much more positive way. Greg Popovich was seen as a genius this spring when he deliberately rested his veterans, as the first-place Spurs lost regular season games in exchange for playoff freshness. Wouldn't it have been fun to pay 150 bucks, expecting to see Tony Parker and Tim Duncan? Ultimately, it almost always comes down to money.

It seems there is a problem with the tournament format if it rewards losing and penalizes winning.

An analogy to MLB baseball is to trot out Nick Blackburn every fifth day. Oh, wait.....

Or how about the Yankees opting for the wild card in 2010 so they could face the automatic-loss-in-the-playoffs Twins? I live in Indonesia right now and I'm slightly miffed that this pair got disqualified. I don't think it's a fair decision--they were just pursuing the strategy that they thought gave them the best chance at a medal. It's the fault of the round-robin format.

Actually, Olympic badminton is really fun to watch, Mr. Souhan--check out Indonesia's Lilyana and Ahmad in mixed doubles, if you get a chance.

Jim, your article and argument has holes in it. You cannot compare resting players to players on the court not trying--two completely different things. Most of your comparisons given don't match up enough. Also, your attitude towards badminton is rather offensive. With the Olympics, you need to think globally, which obviously you don't, spending all your time at Wimbledon, watching more tennis. Way to broaden your horizons. Granted, quite a few Olympic sports are boring to watch, but badminton is one that is watchable for the newbie. I do agree with you on the Olympics' focus on money.

Lawn darts at the Olympics? Now there is an idea. As long as it is the banned Jart-type lawn darts, I might actually decide to watch the Olympics.

I wonder what Tony Dungy thinks of this?

"your attitude towards badminton is rather offensive" Badminton isn't quite as silly as synchronized swimming or the triple-jump, but if they dropped it as an Olympic sport on the competitors and their immediate families would notice. Do they have racquetball and squash? Thos should be in line ahead of badminton.

Shoeless Joe Jackson was not accused of helping to throw the 1919 World Series while he hit .375 - he was punished for knowing about the fix and not saying anything.
