Found under Buick's hood: Free addition to your toolbox

When a broken serpentine belt got changed, there was a pair of Vise-Grips with pieces of rubber hose over each end pinching off the overflow hose just below the radiator cap.

You've got to be kidding, Paul. You do realize that coolant is half water, don't you? What probably happened is that the defunct shop ripped off the owner and the coolant didn't get changed, and what he has now is 11 year old dexcool that is severely broken down.

Wow. I think PB is confusing coolant with motor oil. He appears to be describing the appearance of moisture condensed in the crankcase, not the radiator. I'm no expert, but a cursory search suggests what the writer is seeing in the coolant is oil or possibly transmission fluid. Perhaps PB should have looked this one up in Alldata or asked a mechanic.

What's with the thumbs down? PB wrote this: "The creamy-looking stuff is moisture condensed into the coolant. This occurs in cold weather because of frequent short trips or a faulty thermostat that doesn't allow the engine to come up to full operating temperature," which is fine except it's a description of condensed moisture in the engine oil. The question was about the tan, creamy appearance of the COOLANT. How can there be moisture condensed in the coolant when it's already at least 50% water? Finally, when's the last time we had any cold weather around here?

I'm a pretty long leggedguy. I bought a Chevy Cruze. I drive 122 miles every day to get to work, and this car has been a godsend I average about 40 mpg on my commute. Note: this car is a 6 speed stick. But I do enjoy rowing my own boat. You don't need to buy Japanese to get decent mpg. This is a VERY comfortable car for me.
