To acquire a front-line starting pitcher, they might have to trade one of their top position players.

I say trade them all and go young.

I am sure the Twins discussed, quote unquote, with the Blue Jays a trade of Liriano for Ricky Romero. The discussion most likely went like this - Hey Blue Jays, will your trade us Ricky Romero for Francisco Liriano? - Response, No, no way.

I wonder if Mauer would ever waive his no-trade clause. He has to see the writing on the wall and know that the Twins aren't winning any time soon.

That being said of course the point of this article is entirely valid. They should trade Willingham to the Giants for Kyle Crick.

Uh-Oh, the Cubs got a guy from Atlanta who was ranked 14th on Keith Law's preseason Top 100 Prospects list for Paul Maholm.

So far...this piece has been the best attempt from the Strib to address some of the real issues surrounding this team. As long as the Twins continue to live in the past, there is not much hope on the horizon. Come-on..how could Ryan have thought the Twins pitching was going to be anything different than it's been for the past number of years. How many teams philosophy of pitching to contact ever make it to the post-season? Fans aren't the fools that the Twins have portrayed them to be. This team has never recovered from the tail-end of 2010 and that's just regular season. Gardo blundered at the end of the season and certainly was outclassed in the playoffs. Ryan can trade all the players he wants..there are just as many problems with the coaching staff that never get addressed.

I agree Joe with most of what you say. Unfortunately, along with having no reliable crystal ball, the Twins management always seem to have an abundance of ego that can only come from the tenure that's been given to them. Smith was never held accountable for all his blunders..he's still working for the Twins. Ryan has made just as many blunders or more than good deals. Again..no accountability. When things become stale with other organizations they make changes..the Twins just keep telling everyone how great Gardy is and Andy is the best and Vavy has made Babe Ruth out of everyone...you've all heard it. Contrary to homer Bremer..the Twins team batting average is in the bottom half of the American League..and of course the starting pitching ranks dead last..and how could Ryan have thought anything different starting the season.

hauts81: Before Mauer agreed to waive his no trade clause, the Twins would have to agree to "wave" goodbye to at least $8 million per year.

Morneau, Baker or Blackburn, Span, all free up plenty of money for starting pitching. Spend the money and save your core players including Willingham or your attendance will drop like a Delmon Young fly ball. The future of Diamond or Deduno/ DeVries looks promising, but SPEND THE MONEY or LOSE THE FANS for an established #1 Pitcher.

This article just points out what everyone knows. Smith was out of his realm and Ryan is not much better. Then of course the scouts, manager and staff, the management needs a total make over.
