I'll play Devil's Advocate... I was prescribed Topiramate for Migraine prevention and over the course of about 5 months I went from 177 lbs to 155 lbs, without any noticable changes in hunger/diet. The only side effect I noticed was it really dried me up, particularly my mouth and eyes. Patient instructions for the med recommended drinking more water while using it. Other than that, without even trying, clothes got looser, and comments started coming... "Are you losing weight"?

Who says someone choses to take a pill over diet and exercise? These pills are designed to help speed up the weight loss process not replace diet and exercise.

I'm all for people doing what they need to do to make themselves healthy. Keeps them out of the Dr office and hospital which may end up saving all of us a few bucks in the long run.

Some folks are victims of genetics, pure and simple; people are so quick to pass judgement on others. I take topirimate for migraines and it does shed pounds effortlessly. It happens gradually, but it happens none the less. I think this is a great alternative to costly surgery and think of how our health insurance rates could decline if folks had better tools to help solve their issues with obesity. This is a good thing! Obesity is a plague in this country, we need all the help we can get!

I'm not skeptical that the new pills will help a person lose weight, but I'm also expected that 5 or 10 years down the road we're going to start hearing about unforeseen side effects and they'll end up getting pulled from the market too, and the lawsuits will start coming. I hope that doesn't happen, but it seems to be the case with every other diet pill that has hit the market.

sellwill: "eat less and exercise". Very, very good advice for everyone, and the best manner of lowering your health care bill now, or when single payor arrives.
