Chip Scoggins: While avoiding 'R' word, Vikings have a new look

  • Article by: CHIP SCOGGINS , Star Tribune

This looks like a classic rebuilding job, even if that phrase is widely viewed in professional sports as taboo because of what it suggests.

Allen said -- "These young guys aren't coming onto a team where they're like, 'Oh, we're expected to win the Super Bowl.' Ummm...yes they are. Rebuilding, retooling, reloading, whatever. Pick one. Just win games!

i hope walsh is the answer at kicker. If the vikes offense gets into FG range and cant count on the kicker to convert consistantly from 40yds it will be a long season. I wouldnt mind seeing someone else brought into camp to compete, even if it is just for show. i think Dan Nystrom still lives in MN. remember when he kicked the FG in the upset at #2PENN St. what a game

i also hope brinkley plays lights out because the vikes are counting on him. without a real backup plan and no EJ, the linebacking corps is extremely weak. EJ was always one of my favorites and he was a solid player for the vikes for a long time. And despite ppl saying he was slow or liability in coverage i felt he was actually playing well down the stretch last season. I hope we bring EJ back, but if we truly have seen the last of him in purple and gold i wish him the best and continued luck. P.S. Too bad jamarca could never hit the opposition as hard as he hit ej.

Scoggins - good article. Just a brief comment. I was at training camp on Friday and I noticed some of the same thing I noticed during last season - lack of enthusiasm. Okay it was the first day but I think I was more excited than the team looked. Rebuilding - definitely rebuilding, restructuring - whatever they want to call it all a matter of semantics and if they want to call it something else so be it. But guys get a bit more "umpf" in your behinds. You guys can do this I have faith in you. Been a Vikings fan for 50yrs or so - during the Van Brocklin days - unwaivering, die hard etc etc. Yesterday was a beautiful day weather wise and I was in football heaven. If you want I would be happy to post "encouraging words" everyday if need be . YOU CAN DO THIS GUYS.

Lot of the Vikes have a lot to play for, and should give a thousand percent, on every play. What I am talking about, is what Professional athletes are paid.

Following the last-place finish in 2010, last season was supposed to be the rebuilding/retooling year. But it was botched by Spielman and Frazier, the Vikes went 3-13, and we're no closer to being competitive in the NFC North. So what did the Wilfs do? They promoted Spielman and retained Frazier. This team will never be more than mediocre until we have a competent GM and Head Coach.

@ jlangseth--I think Walsh will do OK. Putting the ball into the back of the end zone every time is as important as making every field goal. It's like having twelve men on the field. Time will tell.

The Vikings need to grow up. Everybody knows that they need to rebuild. They were 3-13 last year. They don't look to be much better than that this year. They still have significant holes on defense, offense and special teams. They got their new stadium. Just admit the rebuild is required and get on with it.
