Daunte Culpepper held such promise as Vikings quarterback ... but it was not to be.

Linehan went to Miami, not Tampa.

It does not matter where he went. When he left the whole season went with it. Too bad the Vikes cant find any good mojo to get back to the big game and win it for the long painful fans who have endured the most embarrassing player scandals, owners and stadium mess. ug

Culpepper was a below average QB at best, Moss made him look good on those rare occassions when he did look like a NFL caliber QB. The bottom line is when it really mattered, in a playoff game like the two NFC Championship games he played in, he was even worse. That 41-donut game sums up his entire career whaich was all hype and very little follow through in games that mattered. I'm glad he is long gone!!!

I actually liked Culpepper a lot. What made him so dangerous was his size and running ability. Once he hurt his knee, that part of his game was no longer a weapon. I still believe that Moss was a huge part of his success. Sure he had some nice numbers just after Moss left, but some of that can be that it took teams a little while to adjust and make his brain and arm beat them. Those were sure some fun times though that any Viking fan can't deny.

Injuries kill so many careers that were destined for the record books. I look at Culpepper, Billy Sims, Don Majkowski (aka the Wally Pip of the NFL), Steve Emtman, and Greg Cook (look that one up, Monday morning QBer's) and think "what could've been". Thanks, Patrick. Great column.

The way I remember it, Culpeper refused to rehab his knee at Winter Park with pros, and tried to do it in a strip mall in Florida.. Never really came back after that

Well, he played in onl one NFC championship game (I assume libraries in Sheboygan close on Sunday, no problem). I agree he played horribly in the 41-donut game. However, to go on the road to storied Lambeau Field four years later and STOMP (and with the assistance of Moss, to Moon) the Pack in the only playoff game between the two teams, makes it up in my book. His injury (and later, his diet) ended his career.

Sorry, this story's lacking a bit or research (for one, Tampa?) For another, that majestic 2004 season, Vikes went 2-3 without Moss, and those 2 wins were against 5 and 6 win teams. Daunte's numbers with Moss were significantly better than his numbers without Moss that season: 98 passer rating without, 116 with Moss, 236 yds/game without, 321 ypg with Moss, 1.8 TDS per game without, 2.7 with. Not that a 98 rating and 236 ypg is bad, but sorry, other than 5 games where Daunte went 2-3 without Moss, through out Daunte's career, Moss made Daunte...

He couldn't deliver a Super Bowl just like every other QB that has played for the Purple. The "Purple Jinx" got to Dante early and often, especially in the 41-0 NFC Championship game against the giants.
