They are buying a pastry store from Italy? Huh? Pastry is dough, filling, and a certain assembly process. Hard to get good quality from machines. Is he hiring an Italian pastry chef? I do not think pastry when I hear cossetta?

Sorry he thinks sustainability is a burden. I'm sure he wants a strong St Paul, including public subsidy for Xcel Center tenants, but when he is asked to contribute to the public good, he does all he can to avoid it. That's what's wrong with our society today.

Bottom line is the Unions and the Democrats don't want small business to thrive in their town. They do everything the can to stop it. Sadly the very people who need the jobs are the ones that suffer. Many business owners have left Minnesota and added to our states unemployment. Again, the minorities and the jobless suffer the most but the Union bosses and liberal politicians keep their jobs and remain tied to the government coffers. The example of Greece and Spain shows what will happen sooner than later. Business owners and those who provide real jobs are powerless to do anything about it. Cosseta is portrayed as a enemy in this article, not someone who is providing jobs and a growing business. Not once in this article is he praised or thanked for doing so.

The city of St. Paul offered a $2 million subsidy for the construction of this new space under a few conditions, one condition was paying the employees a livable wage. After receiving the building grants, the owner has renegged on the conditions originally agreed upon. City councilmembers decided it was fine. Smells like kickback and defrauding taxpayers out of municipal funds.

First let me say I LOVE Cossetta's - their canoli is so good it should be criminal! BUT this article really puts the owners in a bad light - they are trying to skirt around regulations, like being botherered by the burden of sustainability? REALLY? They have been in St. Paul for 100 years, and I would assume they want to be there for another 100 years. So rebuild - but do it RIGHT! And stop trying to bend the rules for yourself!

But ... it would be nice if , somehow, we started fostering companies that could pay higher wages. For all the money Dave Cossetta and family are investing - if the only jobs he creates are $3/buck an hour no-talent food-jockey jobs then ... those jobs aren't going to have a ripple effect - becaue those folks are taking their money home to pay bills - not to go into other local businesses ..... so ... Nice for Cossetta - no so good for the personal income.

It's unbelievable how involved the city gets in micromanaging two private businesses (the restaurant and the contractor) that are working together. $2 million taxpayer subsidy? Dictating wages (aside from federal and state min wage laws and union contracts)? Telling a company what percentage of its workers have to be of certain skin colors and genders? You don't have to be a libertarian to think this is overboard.

The city allowed Cossetta's to pay under minimum wage? Isn't this against the law? Why do they have to go to Italy to buy a bakery? The bakery could just email the recipes and, if they wanted, hire their staff. Mayor Coleman, an alleged Democrat, my council member Melvin Carter III, Bostrom, and David Thune all signed off? Where is the union?
