Portland kept Nicolas Batum -- at a big price -- while the Timberwolves regrouped.

So Kahn danced with the unavailable and even signed him late which now puts him behind and out of the running for some other quality players. Why do I think that was a predictable outcome.

Missed out on Mayo.

While Batum would have been a nice addition, I think the Wolves need to get into the season w Rubio back and assess D Williams. It seems like he's put in a lot of work in the offseason and has the athletic ability to be a big playmaker for the Wolves. If they can get to the playoffs this season, then that opens up all sorts of options for a big-time trade/aquisition for the next year, and getting to the next level. If Rubio gets back sooner than later, I think this team can do it "as is." Nothing against Batum but I don't think he puts fans in the seats or the Wolves in the playoffs.

Disagree, montana, Kahn just forced Portland to overpay in a major way for Batum. The only time I was concerned during the whole ordeal was when he supposedly offered two firsts, maybe three, for Batum, and that would have been way too high of a price to pay. This way, there is 14 million in cap space...the Wolves didn't get their "A" choice...or did they? I foresee the Wolves helping to facilitate a major deal and in the process acquiring one or two very good players to get it done. Do anyone think if the Lakers get Dwight Howard they'll keep both Bynum and Gasol? Keep your eyes on The Kahn in the next few days. And know that division rival Portland just hamstrung themselves for a long time.

It's amazing Kahn still has a job. Seven first round draft picks since he's been here and he's got one guy that can play, and we had to wait two years for him. If a worker at Glen Taylor's business in Mankato failed that miserably, I wonder if they would still have a job?

Not real impressed with how Kahn handled this...at all.

@FireballR22, Do you really think Kahns intention was to make Portland overpay? Kahn wasted valuable time on a deal that was never possible, and even when Kahn finally did decide to make the offer, it was rejected by the NBA because Kahn hadn't cleared enough cap space to even make the offer. More wasted time. Kahn was unprepared, and got played by Olshey into wasting more than two weeks of time negotiating that could have been better spent on players we could actually get. Bidding on Scola would have been nice, but thanks to Kahn and his inept handling of this whole ordeal, that was not even possible. The offer should have been made on July 11th, and instead he didn't make it until July 15th. Just another feather in the cap of Kahn's tarnished legacy. That said, I'm optimistic things will turn out OK. Let's get a move on, Wolves, and get this thing going.

Who cares if Portland had to pay too much for Batum? What good does that do the Wolves and more importantly their long-suffering fans? Taking satisfaction from Paul Allen now having $24.999 billion instead of $25 billion is ridiculous. Quit blowing smoke and get something done, now!

ActTwo - Allen's worth has nothing to do with it. The Blazers cap number, however, is bad. manolive - He couldn't make the offer until he cleared enough space. The offer was NOT rejected by the NBA, obviously, because the Blazers were forced to make a decision on it today. Was it his 100% intention to make Portland overpay? No, I don't believe that for a minute. His intention was to get Batum to Minnesota. But when Portland's GM adamantly stated he would match any offer, Kahn called his bluff. He then proved it by dumping so much salary. I, for one, do not think Batum would have made the Wolves a playoff lock. There are no playoff locks in the West past Okie City and the Lakers this year, IMO. However, I think with guys like Courtney Lee AND the cap room now available to make a trade or be the third wheel in a trade, and get a player the Wolves can use, that it will indeed work itself out. Glad they did not go after Mayo. Scola too soft. Oh, final thought, don't think Kahn hasn't been communicating all along with the agents for the players still out there, telling them to sit tight until the Batum saga played out. Why do you think they all still sit out there? Look for some movement on Lee and the others now that Batum is back to being a Blazer.

Another Kahn failure. When will Glen Taylor finally fire this guy?
