Alexander: Turning off teen Internet isn't so easy

It may be hard to change the culture in your home but we have a policy that all cell phones go in their "charging station" in the mud room before bedtime-that's for all of us so that all of us sleep without phone interruptions. Our teen resisted at first but that's just the way it is in our home.

As a parent, step-parent, and teacher, I can tell you that kids are going to sqwak as soon as you create a rule of any kind. Stick to your rules. They can stay up all night, text til their thumbs fall off, and do whatever other stupid thing they're going to do once the leave. While they're home, be the boss. Don't ever back down.
