I am a member of the "Fortunate Generation," those born in the 1930s, and who were raised during the Great Depression and World War II. We were too young to fight in WWII; we were in college during the Korean War; and too old to fight in Vietnam.

Glad to hear there is at least one old person who understands how easy they had it and how hard they've made it for the future generations. Unfortunately the rest of the baby boom generation will not rest until they've stolen every last dime from the young in the form of welfare (social security and medicare), and public pensions... and bankrupted ever single person under 55. We're headed for another civil war, only this time it will be between the old and the young.

My parents are members of this same generation, and they have never acknowledged the points the author is making. My Dad has been utterly free to pursue his own material wealth his whole life and seems to subscribe to a political and personal worldview exclusively based on its compliance with his desire to continue to be "left alone" to do this. It is a sad, self-centered philosophy that overwhelms my ability to respect him as a person. My Mom is the opposite as an innate nurturer and bleeding heart socialist, but yet seems to refuse to understand that without my Dad's commitment to private enterprise and earning, she couldn't possibly live the life she's led. Maybe no generation is capable of acting with dignity, charity and responsibility, without a catastrophe to contend with?
