There aren’t many things more isolating to older Americans than hearing loss. Hearing loss often goes undiscussed and, left untreated, can lead to depression and social isolation. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is running a "Speak Up About Hearing Loss" campaign urging families to break through the silence and openly discuss hearing loss. As a hearing health care professional at Toronto's Hearing Aid Central, I think these types of incidents are highly preventable through the use of proper hearing protection such as simple ear plugs.
