They have the worst record in the American League and too many holes to expect any rapid improvement.

The Twins decline can be traced back to 3 simple moves. Trading JJ Hardy, not resigning the ODOG and trading Ramos. They should have kept Cuddyear too. This team has too many left handers also. Not enough right handed power. It is clear Morneau will not recover to his MVP form. They should have made a play for Konerko. They need right handed power or left handed power hitters. Too many singles hitters on this team now. Do not trade Willingham or Mauer. Everyone else should be fair game.

Oh yeah Jamie Carrol has to be the biggest disappointment in years even more so than Nishi.

Jim please explain to me how a bullpen can become "burned out" with throwing an inning a piece from the relievers? Please don't tell people like Nolan Ryan or Jim Kaat about being "burned out" in the bullpen. You might get slapped. What an insult to 200 innings plus starters. What an insult.

Thanks for the ray of hope Jim. Didn't see any rays in that article. How come the Yankees can do it every year? When a hole needs to be filled they fill it. They don't wait around. He who hesitates is lost/or already has lost like 52 times. Get the point?

Every avenue? Well last season they replaced the GM. This year they will have to replace the head coach. I predict both Smith and Gardenhire will remain with the team in some capacity. They every day lineup is serviceable. The problem is nothing some high priced free agent pitchers won't fix. It takes money to win.

Most of bloggers in this space saw this coming back in 2010 when we noticed that the "Twins Way" of sound fundamentals was lost. And then last year it became obvious that the minor league cupboard was bare. There are no quick fixes. Management needs to realize that the house has to be rebuilt from the ground up. And that will take new coaching/scouting talent and perseverance at all levels (including us fans). So will the Pohlads and St. Peter be up to the challenge? Notice that I did not include Gardy and even Ryan. We pretty much know the answer to that one.

Trading both Span and Liriano is a "no-brainer" and thank goodness Terry Ryan will be doing the trading rather than the former GM Billy Smith who ought to be in the Obama administration heading the Department of Give-away Programs. Terry knows what's needed and I'd be surprised if he doesn't make some "noise" before the trade deadline. there have been several teams scoutng the Twins recently, so there's interest and hopefully if the Pohlads are smart and agreeable the Twins will also trade Morneau and "eat" a large part of his remaining contract, which will obviously be necessary. If they can get a little something for Carroll and Capps ... go for it ... and I'd think Perkins and Diamond ought to be the only "keepers" on the staff. The next couple of weeks might just be interesting. One can only hope.

I figured out what's gone wrong with the Twins season this year. Gardy was determined not to repeat the dismal 2011 season, so he made a deal with the devil. The only rule was that he could ask for no more than any three tools and/or benchmarks as of the All-Star break. First, he asked Satan that Mauer be healthy enough to play in 5 games a week, a benchmark he's easily cleared. And wanting to anchor a strong offense, Gardy asked that Morneau be healthy enough to DH nightly. And to date he's on pace to double the number of games he played in last year. And knowing the devil to be clever and a shrewd negotiator, Gardy wanted to be careful not to fall into any traps with his third wish. So he thought long and hard, and decided to tie his team's success to that of the preseason pick as the best team in baseball. "All I ask for my third wish, Satan," said Gardy, "is that the Minnesota Twins have the same win/loss record at the All-Star Break as the Philadelphia Phillies."

Gardy and Mr. Ryan significant parts of the solution. The Pohlads must reach out and sign Hamels and Grienke to FA market contracts awarded to SP. Vast OF dimensions, proven winner in Gardy, a weak ALC division all will not hurt the prospects of luring quality SP to a pitching friendly ballpark. The deep pockets are there from ownership. Step up Pohlads like Leopold did across the river and we will continue to fill (or darn near fill) Target Field.

Told you rubes the Twins were DOA in April. They are a terrible team and as of today they are DOA for 2013! Built Pohlad a new stadium...should have built a mausoleum. Contract these bums!
