Terry Ryan has already shown some of his familiar shrewdness, though pitching remains a major issue.

Hey Jim those "exhorbinant free agent contracts" sure worked with the Phillies and Yankees didn't it? CC, Halladay, Lee wow how come it worked with them?

We'll have to see what TR can get for Capps, Liriano, Span, and perhaps a couple others. I'm sure we all wish we could have Ramos back. Maybe the Venezuelan kidnappers would have taken Capps? I don't mean to trash Matt Capps. He's been good, but the closer role is wildly over-rated; especially on a 90+ loss team.

And Jim I believe in the tooth fairy, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Yeh right. Morris was't exactly over the hill when he came to the Twins. Didn't he win another World Series ring with the Blue Jays two years later? So, I guess he had something left?

@swmnguy Liked your post except for the kidnapping remark. Not cool. Just keep it to baseball. Please.

Jim, right on all points. What mystifies me is that they look infinitely better this year, yet their record is the same or worse than last year.

i'm wondering what jim's column was the day after mauer was signed? something tells me he didn't warn of dark days for the twins. souhan is my nominee for the monday morning quarterbacking hall of fame. i can just see the headline about the red sox catcher, mauer, starting in the all-star game had he been traded.

the twins got to 10-26 by playing teams outside of the AL central. they have "come back" against the kansas city's of the world with milwaukee tossed in. this mirage of excellence called twins baseball over the last decade has been driven by one thing and one thing only...the twins play in the worst divsion in pro sports.

pazalunaJul. 13, 12 2:33 AM

i would also add that the twins record with terry ryan at the helm going back to 1995 is below .500. the guy is not very good at his job.

pazalunaJul. 13, 12 2:35 AM

the twins also have the longest playoff losing streak in mlb history...12 games and still active.

meegwichJul. 13, 12 4:17 AM

According to Souhan...everyone in Twinsville should genuflect and bow their heads before Terry Ryan. Sorry, but I don't agree. It's been longer than just the 2011 season that the Twins went into the tank Jim...the finish to the 2010 regular season and the usual Gardo performance in the playoffs should have sent the red flags up the pole and signaled the Twins mediocre play against the better teams in MLB was catching up to them. Change can only happen if change takes place...and until the Twins..and Terry Ryan..decide the Twins way doesn't really exist anymore...probably never did...and new leadership and a new approach to the clubhouse and on-field game management takes place...they are doomed to repeat this same article next year. What a difference it's made in Chicago.
