A life of contradictions: Shedding light on Dark Star

  • Article by: MIKE KASZUBA , Star Tribune

Once he was plain old George, and then, foibles and all, he turned himself into one of the Twin Cities' most flamboyant sports media personalities. Like the name he took to his death, he was full of contradictions.

He was great as an entertainer. WCCO AND KFAN miss him. He was out there....but who cares.

I don't remember much about Dark Star other than occasionally listening to him after Twins games. "After midnight, we're gonna let it all hang out." What a character! RIP.

Sometimes he would devote much of his late night show to talk of horse racing. I have zero interest (or knowledge) of horse racing but I never turned the dial because it was Dark Star doing the talking! No matter what he talked about, he was always interesting and entertaining. I never met him in person but I miss him terribly.

I thought his radio personality was bombastic and ignorant. Most disgusting was his radio show after Vikings games primarily on Sunday afternoonw - was it Sunday Sports Huddle? He did not want to be there, he did not want to do that show. It was very apparent. Oh my! Also, I will never agree that water fountains may spread AIDS and that Denney Green was discriminated against because he is an African American. Some of Dark's views were idiotic. Well, the clock on the wall says it is time for bed. Good night!

Insurance fraud, forgery, using three aliases, duping betters who relied on him or pontificating endlessly on topics he new nothing about. I'm not sure who is more pathetic - George, Dark Star etc- or the many people quoted in this store who found these traits charming and quaint. Enough already.

Dark was who he was and the Grace of our Lord is for people like him and the rest of us.

From what I've heard, been told he was a friend and being a friend to anyone who needed one in a time of dispair trumped all the other non sensical things you may have heard about him. He supposedly did a lot for others, advice, and the lost art of........giving up your own time to be make others people's time happy. That doesn't sound like too bad a person to me. And for others to not see what traits really are important, well I guess you will find your way some day too.

Great article. Moral of the story, he was a real person. Flaws, fibs, compassion, friendship, all of it. We try to put people in boxes too often. This guy is good, or this guy is bad. Most people are a little bit of both. You can be a compassionate person who would do anything for those that you care about, and still have issues. People still put Kirby Puckett on a pedastal for all the good he did, but there were some very dark spots within him also. This is purely as an observer, since I never met him, but I think the good way more than outweighed the bad with Dark and he would have been someone that I would have liked to get to know, even though you'd have to take the good with the bad.

Dark was a part of the fabric of this state. There's no other way to say it.

I always thought that Dark and The Crusher might be twins seperated at birth. They REALLY looked alike.
