Childhood books are lifelong friends

Beloved books we read as kids can stay with us all our lives. Series such as the Betsy-Tacy books, the focus of an upcoming convention, are literary security blankets.

As someone who developed a love for reading as a young boy devouring The Hardy Boys series back in the '70's, I can totally relate to the allure of revisiting the books that engaged and inspired us as children! When modern day troubles and worries (Obamacare, Obamanomics, the entitlement society quickly taking root in our country) seem almost overwhelming and heartbreaking, it is a welcome escape to go back in literature to a time when there was a clear division between "good guys" and "bad guys", the hallmark of civil society was hard work and independence, and by the end of the book full faith and confidence was restored and reinforced in our institutions of authority!
