A culinary trip Up North

Each bend of Hwy. 61 reveals yet another spectacular rocky cliff, an awe-inspiring lake vista, a roadside streaked purple by blooming lupine, a seemingly endless carpet of pine and birch. Sometimes all four, simultaneously. All that beauty naturally overshadows a different but no less compelling brand of scenery: rooftop signs heralding "Fresh Pie." Lake Superior views framed by dining room windows. Smoked lake trout stacked behind glass cases. Welcome to the North Shore, and don't forget to pack your appetite.

The quite beauty of the North Shore wilderness has been developed to death by tacky, trendy and toursity clap trap. Having grown up there, I mourn the loss of a natural wonder.

I love the North Shore! Our favorite stops are Gunflint Tavern, Lemon Wolf Cafe for fresh herring, Russ Kendall's Smoke shop to grab fish on your way up to GM, and on the way home to stay a little longer on the shore, the New Scenic Cafe near Duluth. Such a great place and so close to the city!

In the early 70's, Duluth was the home of the best restaurant I ever ate at. It was the Chinese Lantern that has since burned down. When making reservations you had to also reserve their extremely large and delicious prime rib. Set in downtown Duluth in the shadow of the Radisson, it was a cozy place that has not since been duplicated.

Every time we travel 61, there's no way we're missing My Sisters Place. Best burgers around and cold beer in mason jars!

Rick, thanks for the tips on the places I wasn't aware of. Sorry to quibble, but "bismark" is spelled without a 'c.' Second the readers' motions on the Lemon Wolf Cafe (Beaver Bay) and My Sister's Place (Grand Marais outskirts). Those are musts as well.

We were in Duluth over the 4th and had some great meals. The New Scenic Cafe is wonderful! We had a great meal (although not cheap) and great wine. The next day we ventured up to the Rustic Inn in Castle Danger, near Gooseberry. That was fabulous! They had arguably the best micro brew Ive ever had and their pie beats Betty's hands down.

So excited to see all the great restaurants in Grand Marais getting some publicity! Also worth noting is Lutsen Resort (their formal dining room overlooking the lake is spectacular, as is their potato-crusted walleye, swedish creme, & blueberry pie), and India Palace in downtown Duluth--their Saag Paneer is hands-down the best I've ever tasted!

Shhh, don't tell anyone about the New Scenic Cafe... I have driven up there from Bloomington just to have dinner and then driven back. Best place to eat in MN.
