Souhan: Whether or not Leipold scores, at least he's in free-agent game

The Wild might or might not sign Zach Parise today, and if it does sign Parise the move might or might not become one of the great acquisitions in Twin Cities sports history, but this much is already certain: The Wild's brain trust will receive maximum points for gumption.

This is nothing more than a stunt/window dressing to allow long suffering Wild fans to dream of what could be ... if they were Red Wings fans! Wild gonna' give 'em some hope. Then gonna' wake 'em up in reality next fall with another minor league offering- at major league prices. It would take Wild signing BOTH players (ain't gonna' happen) and they'd BOTH have to stay healthy ... and the existing supporting cast of players would ALL have to stay healthy - just to lift this club to a second round playoff level. As for Leipold- he knows his market. He knows Wild minions will continue to dutifully offer 'tributes to the emperor'- on average at about $125 per fan each game - whether he spends another dime or not. I just don't see that he has the incentive to pull the trigger. I also don't see why 2 world class players would join a perennial bottom feeder.

By all accounts, if you're going to make that large of a financial committment, you'd be hard pressed to find 2 better examples of what a "role model Athlete" should be today. That alone makes it less risky, both of these guys are in their prime and ownership realizes people will stop coming eventually.

C'mon Zach, sign with the hometown team. Bring back memories of J.P. scoring goals for the North Stars!

At least the Wild fans can be pleased the owners tried their best to improve. The Pohlads would rather count their money then spend it. Typical bankers, they never spend their own money only others.

Two large contracts at the same time sounds like the Twins predicament so it may be better if the Wild don't get both players. Zach seems like a good guy who is trying to make the right decision for his family. Please don't boo him if he doesn't sign with the Wild.

Hope we hear something today, the Wild needs to improve in a big way with or without these guys. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing a significant trade also. Go Wild !

Jimmy... I usually cringe every time you write about hockey. Lets just say today was a "good trip to the plate". Carolla equals Adam, Corolla equals Toyota. And... Andy Griffith RIP, thx for all of the laughs... best episode, the goat that ate dynamite.

The Wild are on the verge of the greatest upset in NHL history..Signing two of the most coveted UFA's ever to hit the market. This team can do it and if they do, the NHL and hockey world will have no choice but to respect the team and its management.
