Plan to hunt wolves illustrates culture clash

American Indian bands cite a spiritual connection to the wolf and are protesting the notion of hunting them.

Any hunter who kills a wolf should eat that very same wolf. Feed it to his or her family. Real hunters don't trophy hunt, and don't disregard the important role that predators play in maintaining balance in the ecosystem.

Amen to Solarnow's comment. Taking wovles isn't hunting, it's simply killing for killing's sake and the DNR, by pushing it, is pandering to the loud minority it sees as its base.

spoke by people who have no idea of the balance of nature. if you sell deer hunting licenses you are hunting the wolves prey and the wolves then have to feed on cattle or sheep. get it?

The native american indians clearly value wildlife much more than your average typical white hunter. It's sad that hunters love killing animals for sport and for trophies. They are as anti-wildlife as you can get.

They love wolves yet have no qualms about netting hundreds of thousands of pounds of walleye from our lakes. Hmmmm

Again with the "spiritual" balderdash! Amerindian tribes, along with tribal people worldwide, have *always* hunted wolves. Otherwise, their children would end-up as meals. And I also gotta laugh at all you urbanized white folks who have fetishized predators like wolves and polar bears. These ain't warm-fuzzy plush toys or cartoon characters sharing a coke with a penguin! These are savage predators who would just as soon make a meal of you!

Anyone that thinks the bands care about their 'brother' the wolf are delusional. This is all about politics and power as per usual. They see an opportunity to get that power over the state and they want it. It has nothing to do with spiritual or cultural differences.

In my culture, one can call a person who kills a wolf a coward, without being censored. In my culture, which is based on the Constitution of the United States, one may call a wolf killer, dressed up in a blaze orange clown suit, an object of fun and Freudian delight. There are indeed cultural differences on this issue, but not only between Native Americans and the anti-wildlife crowd.
