Egad -- When I read those 2 lineups (1st and "2nd" strings)... I still get goosebumps, thinking of the sheer greatness of that team. Great memories. jpnIII

I was proud of those guys whooping international tail, so to speak, and I was thinking of Don Haskins getting screwed against the Russians with the extra time put on the clock not once, but twice. But I was pissed the players were more concerned with their contracts with clothing than wearing the American olympic uniform. I loved it, but they pissed me off at the same time.

Not questioning the talent on that roster, but "greatest athletic team ever assembled" is, of course, subjective. How about the '65 National League All-Star roster? Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Willie Stargell in the outfield. Clemente and Frank Robinson in reserve. Koufax, Marichal, and Bob Gibson among the pitchers...

What was always funny about the "Dream Team" is that their opponents took their beatings and loved it. Jordan, Johnson, Bird et al were the guys that the guys who were their countries' best basketball players truly dreamed of seeing and playing against. They took that experience and became better and the kids in their countries watched those games and dreamed of becoming the best they could be.

The one strike against the "Dream Team": Lates (Christain Laettner) getting a roster spot.

I think that if was an opposing coach I would have been tempted to make them an offer: "look guys, we'll play a half, you'll murder us, and that will count as the game, and then in the second half we'll split up the teams playground-style and just have fun". Can you imagine being a guard, walking onto the court, and saying to your guard teammate "ok, do you wanna cover Magic, or Michael?"

@coreyallen "@the head coach of the '72 Olympic team was Hank Iba not Don Haskins" .......................................................... I stand corrected. Haskins was an assistant to Iba on that team, and had played for Iba in college. I'm a Don Haskins fan (had a drink or two with him before) and had forgotten.
