It'd be interesting to take a look at Sid's commentary after the infamous riot. It's be quite revealing.

Mo Walker hurt his knee, so how is it that Sid says he tweaked his "ankle" again?

Witte was assaulted, pure and simple. Another hard-hitting column by Sid.

Why are we sending Jimmy Carter to the middle east to broker peace plans? We should be sending Sid...

I was at the game and it happened right in front of where I was sitting just behind the basket. It was a cheap shot by Taylor in offering to help Witte up as would be indicated by good sportsmanship following a hard foul by Behagen...and then kneeing him in the groin. That behavior may well have been consistent with street culture but not part of major college basketball competition. Glad to hear that Witte and Taylor reconciled following Taylor's street behavior. It was just plain thuggery...nothing more and nothing less...that had no place in college sports no matter how Uncle Sidney may try to spin it.

Way to pat yourself on the back again Sid. You are a determined self-promoter.

They must have thought they were playing Minnesota High School Hockey! Actually I was at the U at the time....not sure I would have called it a riot...just a little scuffle on the court. With that said, Gophers haven't had a team that talented since!

It was a dark moment in MN sports history. Williams Arena, leading up to that event, was the most electrified venue in college sports. The Barn would be rockin' BEFORE the game like nothing we see now, and the game itself would send the place practically into orbit. That team was incredibly talented. (Dave Winfield was a non-starter!) But after that, the place and the program were never quite the same again.

A number of people have said that what happened that night was shocking for a number of reasons, significantly because what Corky Taylor did was remarkably out of character. He has been regarded by many as a very nice and polite individual. From that moment, Corky was to spend the rest of his life trying to show others that his true self was that of a person who was kind, patient, and thoughtful of others. May that be his legacy.
