After "studying" these rivers for many years now, including a year at UMD, I've yet to see more than two hens in any NS river. Granted, they are hard to see, but dolts like me add a lot of pressure on these fish who should be used to a river bereft of gawking, or worse, angling humans. If you've been to the French you can see the obstacles that these fish have to overcome to get more than 100 yards up the river. Amazing that they can even overcome the first set of cascading river. As an "angler", I'm torn on what we can do to help the steelhead. Ban angling in the river itself? But then the species would have less support in legislative matters. Catch and release only? But those who have fished big trout know that you can fatally injure these jewels (especially with barbed hooks) despite your catch and release etiquette. I guess I would be for a ban (not without regret) of river/stream fishing and allowing fishing of the big lake 100' from the river/stream mouth (the current law for those without trout stamps). Tough one.
