Drivers over 70 will triple in the next 20 years, forcing families to talk to older adults about taking the keys.A lot of people equate their self-worth with being able to drive.

I'd gladly give up my keys for decent public transportation. As long as Commuter Transit (i.e. Metro Transit) caters only to bedroom communites during rush hours I'm going to have to keep the keys and you can pull them out of my cold dead hand

Senior Drivers have an attraction to store front windows, as to barrel their 5,000 pound vehicle right inside.

google and several other companies are in the process of getting permits for completely driver-less cars. it will probably be only 5-10 years before this technology is mainstream. they would be huge for increasing seniors' independence.

Here's what you do, from me, a full-time Florida resident. You shift the elderly family assets to a trust fund that prevents any lawsuits. Then you retire your parents to the great old-age community of Florida, and let them drive all they want. They won't kill any of YOUR neighbors. You avoid that awkward but needed talk. And you get no guilt. For the rest of us Florida residents, your parents run red lights and kill people. Down here the Naples newspaper refuses to publish drivers ages in accident reports because it looks bad on senior citizens. And they might drop their subscription to the paper. I have seen some "drunks" with faster reaction time and better demeanor than some senior citizens. The horror stories I have seen in Florida with old people driving. The horror.

I'm about to have this talk with my mother....and it's not going to be pretty. I won't let my kids drive with her.

Why stop with seniors? At least this group was driving during an age where "driving defensively" was extensively taught. I still remember and use the same technique and it has saved me several times over the years from idiots who have a death wish. Should there be a regular exam for seniors? Sure, I wouldn't mind but let's have that same test for the people who constantly have a cell phone in their ear too. Nine times out of ten, when I see a dumb move on the highway, it is not a drunk, it is someone that is doing the distracted driving thing with a cell phone. I tried it once... it doesn't work. Driving, simply, is a full time job.

I certainly don't oppose more stringent standards for seniors. In fact I would favor more stringent standards for ALL drivers, plus tougher penalties across-the-board for reckless, impaired or distracted driving. It is a critical need, in my opinion.

Appealing to concerns about safety is useful, but I found that appealing to concerns about money was more motivating. I suggested to Dad that if he had an accident, any article in the newspaper near him would likely lead with "94 year old man . . ." and a lawsuit could follow. I heard him repeating the concept to friends and it seemed to give him a good excuse to avoid driving. However, having access to transportation is critical. He is in an independent housing situation which provides buses to his doctors and shopping.

YOUR feeling of self worth is not worth MY life or the lives of my children as they ride their bikes or cross the street. If I were in charge, you would have to pass a yearly behind the wheel exam.
