Overnight downpours, dumping as much as 10 inches of water in some parts of Duluth and surrounding areas, created the worst flash floods in more than a century.

I fell sorry for the people of Duluth that are going through this. But, that water should fill up Lake Superior quite a bit. Now let's hear from the enviromentalist talking about the lake being low.

The first paragraph strikes fear into the reader by saying that animals escaped the zoo! But further down, the zoo staff says no animals left the zoo grounds and were secure. What's with the sensational lead-in? Also it's hard to imagine that flooding occurs in Duluth - doesn't it all just run downhill into the lake? :)

All right, drillforiol, here's your environmentalist talking about the lake being low: Anyone who thinks that the rain they got was enough to raise the lake significantly knows nothing about the issue. Happy?

No animals left the zoo grounds? This info contradicts what the same zoo spokeswoman said on MPR this morning. On MPR, she reported that the zoo officials first became aware of the situation at the zoo when a citizen called to tell them that one of their seals was sitting in the middle of Grand Avenue, which according to my coworker who is from Duluth, is 4 miles from the zoo.

1972 I lived at W 5th Street and Messabi Ave, Right above St Marys. We had storms one after another. Uphill from downtown the storm sewers got plugged up and the raging water washed out roads and sidewalks so one could see water and gas lines. Huge slabs of blacktop went down hill in one piece. Downtown was covered in the washings from above. Not sure how these storm stack up to then but sad as it may be it's not the first epic damage to Duluth.

tria56 - Grand Avenue is the street directly outside of Lake Superior Zoo, it is not four miles away.

I'm just glad we got to build new pro-stadiums than rebuild and repair aging infrastructure. Nice job, Minnesota!

This is pretty sad to see, being a grad from UMD, Duluth was home to me for many years. I hope the next round of storms doesn't impact the city any further and result in anyone getting hurt. I'll cross my fingers for you Duluth!

Amazingly enough this hasnt made the national news, but then again, its only in "fly over" country!! If this was happening someplace in CA or NY, you bet this would lead the news casts.
