"By saying no to gluten and dairy and yes to fruits and veggies, he's making better food choices." The fruit and vegetable part is accurate. Where is the science that says someone who is not gluten intolerant is better off without?

If its not strength then why such an uproar with all the steroids in baseball the past 20 years?

mn55416, It's not recommended for people who do not have an allergy or an intolerance to gluten to cut gluten out of their diets. If you read the article, Morneau WAS diagnosed with a gluten intolerance. That is why he cut gluten out of his diet.

MORNEAU'S PROBLEMS HAVE RESULTED FROM HIS CONTINUAL ATTEMPT THE LAST TWO YEARS TRYING TO SHORTEN THE BACKSWING PART OF HIS SWING MECHANICS, RESULTING IN 1. A SHORTER SWING THAT REQUIRES MORNEAU TO MORE VIOLENTLY SWING TO MAKE UP FOR THE CHANGE IN LENGTH OF SWING CAUSING NUMEROUS INJURIES AND 2. TWISTING AWAY FROM THE PITCH WHILE TRYING TO HOLD HIS HANDS AND ARMS IN A STILL POSITION AND CAUSING HIM DIFFICULTY HITTING LEFT HANDERS WHEN TURNING AWAY FROM THE PLATE DURING THE PITCH PREVIOUS TO HIS FORWARD SWING. ADDITIONALLY, MORNEAU IS COACHED AS ALL THE TWINS TO WAIT LONGER FOR THE PITCH TO GET DEEP BEFORE SWINGING AT THE PITCH AND CAUSING THE BAT TO HIT THE BALL BEFORE THE ARMS ARE FULLY EXTENDED, RESULTING IN LESS POWER, WITH THE BAT AT AN ANGLE TO HIT THE BALL UP THE MIDDLE AND TO THE OPPOSITE FIELD. THESE CHANGES IN HITTING MECHANICS WILL KEEP MORNEAU OUT OF THE HALL OF FAME AND ENDED THE EARLY CAREER COMPARISONS FOR MORNEAU TO TED WILLIAMS.

Justin should go back to his old diet, maybe then he could hit lefties. Take a look at how Pat Neshek's special diet worked out for him.

A professional athlete should take care of their body like this. Good for Justin. I'm no doctor; but it absolutely seems to make sense that the choices he is making could result in less imflammation in his body. And there is plenty of science to say that is good for anyone's mind or body. I'm surprised that he gets strange reactions to eating lots of fruits and veges.

I agree that Justin's problems are not only gluten. Joe Vavra is his problem because Vavra can't teach power swinging because he never was in the big leagues and doesn't have a clue.

Shouldn't this article appear in the Nutrition section, where it is more suited? And as Justin can easily afford a private chef to cater his meals, and trainers and specialists for whatever ails him, I don't feel any empathy for him. Must be a slow news week in professional sports... surely there are OTHER local sports people to write about. I hear the Lynx are still playing ball -- and winning!

Two of my interests fused: training/nurtition and baseball. So many people, even highly trained athletes, so easily forget that food is the fuel your body runs on. You wouldn't put kerosene in your Ferrari and expect it to run well! No, you put the highest BPA gas you can get, check the oil often, and treat that fine automobile right. When you do that, it PERFORMS. Amazing people don't think the same way with their bodies.

zeldac, Trevor Plouffe gives full credit to Vavra for his short compact swing for hitting the long ball. Just sayin'...
