The article failed to mention the reason 5 of 6 ethanol plants lost money in the first quarter of 2012. Up until December 31st,2011 the US government paid .50 of every dollar spent on purchasing corn for their plants through subsidies. This inflated crop prices, and also inflated profits for the ethanol plants.

Why must they try all these corn based gas additives? Bio-diesel has worked in the private sector for years. Why not embrace it and make vehicles that run on it? Today, only Mercedes Benz and Volkswagon make family cars that run on Bio-diesel.

I'm sure the reason for the switch isobutanol is there is some government handout that the current "GREEN" administration is offering. Sounds like more funny math on jobs creation.

Plant-based chemicals(isobutanol/biobutanol) have a big upside. If you don't agree, take a look at all the petrochemicals that are in plastics that you (or your family) come in contact with on a daily basis. The demand for this product is bigger than you think.

There is no difference between isobutanol produced from propene and that produced from fermenting carbohydrates.

@george13: Think big picture - there is a difference.

oldno7- I think you failed to realize that the blenders credit got paid to big oil not the ethanal companies. volumes are down thus the less effcient plants did not make money. Big picture- does every company make money every quarter? answer is no.

@george13:You're absolutely correct. Anyone who was awake in chemistry knows that.
