Owners should resist the temptation to sell the land they own, especially if it has been in the family for generations. Choices for reinvesting the proceeds are limited and risky. Always better to hold onto the land than to sell it and buy vacation homes, new SUV's and take cruises. Ignore the high prices, just take the income and appreciation gained from it. Once your land is sold, it is gone forever.

I'm glad I didn't listen to you when I sold my home in 2006. This is nothing more than another government created asset bubble. There are still a few credit worthy chumps out there willing overpay for this land at the moment so sell it while you can. When this bubble bursts in a couple years and the Farmaid concerts start up again you can use your windfall profits to swoop in and buy back farmland at rock-bottom prices. Farming is a business. When you lose sight of that and begin focusing on your ancestral land or how many generations of family lived on the property it clouds your judgment and leads you into making poor financial choices.

This bubble is fueled by the ethanol mandate, which is distorting corn prices, and creating an overall commodity bubble. When the government comes to it's senses and finally eliminates the ethanol subsidies (and fuel blend mandates) the price of corn (and therefore other crops that are competing for acreage) will plummet, along with the price of farmland, food, and fuel.
