Hartman: Look for Vikings offensive line to improve

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

You analyze the Vikings' 3-13 record last year, and a part of the reason for the poor play was an offensive line that was riddled by injuries to center John Sullivan, Steve Hutchinson and Anthony Herrera. ¶ Now with offensive line coach Jeff Davidson in his second year at the position, there is good reason to believe that the line will be solid this year and will do a much better job protecting quarterback Christian Ponder.

I doubt it Sid, the All-Pro Hutchinson is gone and you yourself said he was one of the viking's best O-lineman ever and could never be replaced. If you think Kalil is going to step in and fill Hutchinson's shoes without missing a beat you are wrong as usual.

Ok First of all. Kalil is a LT not LG.So he is not replacing Hutch to begin with.. Hutch was good...2 years ago ... Now he is an often injured...and quite frankly has a bad attitude...and he is old. Charlie Johnson is a good guard and will fill in nicely for one maybe two years. Now in sids defense...Cris carter was never a number one receiver.... I realize his stats. However he was a possesion receiver and not a big play threat. Carter's best asset was his ability to catch ANYTHING thrown his way. His best years were with guys like Moss stretching the field for him to hit underneathe routes. Jerome simpson could do Exactly this. Not agreeing with Sid. However his comparison is Not as crazy as people are making it out to be.

@kylemind - I didn't say Kalil was replacing Hutchinson's position, filling his shoes as the team's "best O-lineman" and him being an "offensive team leader in the huddle" (to use Sid's words when the vikings signed him from Seattle and every time he was elected to the Pro Bowl) is what I was getting at. Hutchinson cannot be replaced in a year and to say the O-line will be better is nothing more than homeristic nonsense but I guess that is what Sid is paid to do even though it couldn't be any further from reality.

Sid is right. This Offensive Line could not be worse than last year. The Vikings made the right move for the team by drafting Kalil. The left side of the line just got awesome.

The Twins have beaten up on three bad teams and one mediocre team (the Tribe). If they're still playing like this in a month, then you can say it wasn't a mistake to clean house.

Now that some of the rotations has been cleaned up/hope we never see Baker again and Blackie is gone by the All-Star break, maybe Ryan will address the Liriano and Pavano issues. Huge mistake to resign these guys. Trade them and get value and young arms. Don't kid yourself Sid, this team doesn't have the staff to win the division. Now everyone wrote of the Yankees starting rotation but look what's happened. Nova, CC, Hughes, Korda and one old guy name Petite is not a bad staff at all.

goody, an outside chance to win another meaningless central title and the right to get swept in the playoffs. The legacy of terry ryan and ron garden ire lives on.

Terry Ryan is the master of making statements that aren't really statements...at least one's he can be held accountable for. Do you think for a second he's going to admit he did nothing to improve the starting pitching from last year. Winning a few games from the likes of the Royals, and the Cubs, and an Indian team that had 2/3 of their line-up on the DL at the time doesn't exactly add up to competing for the world championship. Until Ryan has the courage to address the on-field management of this team don't hold your breath for any postseason anytime soon.

Is it September yet? Should be a fun year for Viking football. Looking forward to seeing our new youth develop. We may even see Brett Favre back..:-)..albeit Brett did say when asked about playing for the Saints, that he was OK staying retired and really enjoyed his final years playing with the Vikes. He didn't say anything about the Packers. Is it just the ugly green uniforms with the simple G that makes players want to leave the Pack?

The Twins are winning a few games now due to a couple of things. First the A's, Indians, Royals, and Cubs do not compare to the Rangers, Rays, angels, and Yankees the Twins played the 1st 6 weeks of the season. 2bd is the starting pitching is better with Walters and Damond. Still at best the Twins may win 70 games, and that may be a stretch. I would not be opposed to trading Span, if the Twins got a bona fide high quality starting pitcher in return.
