We need to stop wasting money on nonsense like
this and accept the fact that some kids just
plain aren't as smart as others. This is reality,
get over it! I could spend every dime I have to
try to teach my dog algebra and in the end it will
be a waste of time and money because she's a dog
with a dog's brain.
Many of us have been preaching for two decades that civil courts are destroying America. The plaintiff can sue for very little cost but the defendant can pay a ton in legal costs even if they win, tons more if they lose, the burden of proof is far less, the juries don't need be unanimous to rule for the plaintiff, etc. The trial lawyer bar has ensured a rigged game, with lawyers benefiting the most. America spends about 600 billion each year on defensive medicine. Our legal system is why so many companies move jobs abroad. The country is going bankrupt, and our civil courts are a major cause. If KK speaks the truth, "education lawsuit" may push the populace to really revolt.
KK, I usually am right with you, but not in this case when you say that the achievement gap is a result of socioeconomic factors and family dynamics. That's like saying that my basketball team has not shot of winning because we have all guys 6' tall. In education we have to do great things with what we have. The public talk of "socioeconomic factors" and "family dynamics" are nothing but excuses and a crutch for educators who don't want to work hard enough to make sure every student learns what they have to teach. Parents send schools the best they've got. I'd suggest teachers/administrators that want to see the how, to read any work by Karin Chenoweth, or the book No Excuses: Lessons from 21 High Performing, High Poverty Schools by Samuel Carter Casey. But read with an open mind--they start to change how business gets done in your school every day. You may be surprised what "those kids" can accomplish.
I think what she is saying is that we should forget everything that she has been saying about education in the past and now she wants to have us believe the opposite because now her ideology can see that what they said before is going to be actually measured and the results used and her ideology cann't control the actions so they want to reverse course and head the other way so they can control the results. Anyway, forget it, and she wants to use the "study" to have the herd go the other way now. WOW.
Hundreds of billions of dollars, if not trillions, have been WASTED on closing the "achievement gap". It has not closed at all. Read up on the heritability of intelligence. Then you will see how stupid all of this "equality" nonsense is. Each human being is genetically unique and thus unequal. This will ALWAYS be the case no matter how much money the Democratic Party steals from wage earners and redistributes to others.
Kersten writes: "On average, black and Hispanic students perform far below their white peers, as a result of socioeconomic and family risk factors."
Then why are we going after teachers? If the academic achievement gap is due to "socioeconomic" factors shouldn't we be trying to raise up the families? As a commenter wrote about Kersten a few weeks back, "I've never met a person who thinks like Kersten writes."
Can you say mixed message? In the past, Kersten has screamed about "accountability" based on test results, i.e. outcome--which she maligns in this piece--and used this as a foil to attack the teacher's union. Now, all of the sudden, schools shouldn't be held accountable for the outcome of minority students because it would increase school funding, something the right-wing has been railing against for years. I guess this is what happens when you paint yourself into ideological corners. I suspect that if she were discussing the outcome of Caucasian students, the tune would be different. I guess only minorities are acceptable ideological sacrifices to the right-wing.

I think the real group behind these lawsuits is an organization dedicated to the advancement of homeschooling, because an increase in homeschooling is a far more likely outcome than the sort of academic improvement this legislation promises. When I, a parent of two young children, read a story like this, the word, "Homeschooling" comes to mind early and often. Fiendishly clever strategy....
Um...didn't No Child Left Behind already provide an excellent framework for this type of litigation? It's a hideous Catch-22: study after study proves that human beings develop physically, emotionally, and cognitively at different rates over time, yet we still pursue the same insane notion that every kid at age X will be able to do Y. We continue to base our school year on a calendar in which kids were expected to be working in the fields during the summer. And we continue to expect to see the same results from schools with wildly divergent populations in terms of culture, mobility, language, and socioeconomic background, to name a few.
